The Standard
What it takes for a product to earn a place here.
Four non-negotiable criteria, a six-step vetting process, and a hard rule: no brand can pay to be included. Ever.
The four criteria
Clean Materials
No PFAS. No phthalates. No endocrine disruptors.
Every product starts with an ingredients or materials audit. For anything touching skin, food, or air, I cross-reference the formulation against the EPA's PFAS database, the EWG Skin Deep database, and the European Union's REACH restricted substances list. For textiles, I look for OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 or GOTS certification as a baseline — these are the only third-party programs I trust to do the lab testing I can't do myself.
Marketing words like 'clean', 'green', 'natural', and 'non-toxic' mean nothing without third-party verification. A product can legally be called natural while containing parabens and synthetic fragrances. I don't use those words as criteria — I look at ingredient lists and certifications.
Passes
- OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified
- EWG Verified
- GOTS Certified Organic
- No fragrance or 'fragrance' listed
Fails
- 'Natural' without third-party cert
- Teflon or PTFE in any coating
- Synthetic fragrance listed as ingredient
- 'PFAS-free' without supporting data
Honest Manufacturing
I want to know where it's made, and by whom.
Supply chain transparency is one of the clearest signals of a brand's integrity. Brands that publish factory addresses, conduct third-party audits, and disclose their production partners are doing the work. Brands that answer 'our products are made responsibly' without specifics are not.
I also look at who absorbs the cost of better manufacturing. A brand with clean materials and ethical labor will almost always cost more than its conventional equivalent. When a product seems suspiciously cheap, I want to know what's being compressed — and it's usually either materials quality or worker wages.
Passes
- Published factory locations
- B Corp certified
- Certified Fair Trade
- Living wage commitment documented
Fails
- Vague 'responsibly made' claims
- No supply chain information available
- Certification logos without certificate numbers
- Third-party manufactured with no audit
Built to Last
One good thing instead of ten disposable ones.
The most sustainable product is the one you don't replace. I apply a simple test: would I expect this to last ten years with normal use? If not, it needs a compelling reason to be on this site — because a well-made $150 pan is more sustainable than a $30 pan replaced every two years, by every metric.
I actively deprioritize anything designed for obsolescence: products with proprietary refill systems that lock you in, items with deliberately fragile components, or brands with documented histories of manufacturing changes that degrade quality after a review cycle. Durability is a sustainability criterion, not a luxury one.
Passes
- Lifetime warranty or repair program
- Replaceable parts available
- Materials that improve with age (cast iron, leather, wood)
- Designed by engineers, not marketing
Fails
- Built-in obsolescence (battery not replaceable)
- Fragile coatings on daily-use items
- No repair path once broken
- Designed to be 'refreshed' each season
No Paid Placements
This is the rule with no exceptions.
No brand has ever paid to be on this site. No brand ever will. When I receive a product for review, I note it — but it doesn't change whether the product makes it onto the site or not. The editorial standard is the same regardless of how the product arrived in my hands.
Affiliate links are how this site generates revenue. When you click a link and make a purchase, I earn a small commission at no cost to you. I disclose this because I think it matters. But the commission is a consequence of recommending a product, never the reason for it. I've turned down affiliate relationships with brands I don't trust, and I've included products on this site that have no affiliate program at all.
Passes
- Affiliate link disclosed on every page
- Products included with no affiliate program
- Brands rejected despite large commission offers
- Negative information disclosed when relevant
Fails
- Any brand paying for placement
- Any brand paying for a positive review
- Undisclosed gifted products
- Commission rate influencing recommendation
How it works
The vetting process, step by step
Initial screen
Brand submitted or identified. Immediate disqualifiers checked: PFAS, phthalates, synthetic fragrance, no third-party certs.
Deep materials audit
Full ingredient or materials list reviewed against EWG, EPA PFAS database, REACH restricted list.
Manufacturing review
Supply chain transparency checked. Factory disclosure, audit reports, and labor certifications reviewed.
Durability assessment
Warranty, repair program, and expected lifespan evaluated. User reviews for real-world durability.
Jenny's note
I write a personal note explaining exactly why this product made the cut and what to watch for when using it.
Ongoing monitoring
Products are periodically re-checked. Formulation changes, ownership changes, and new research trigger re-review.
